Biography

Lee Frost is one of the UK’s most renowned landscape and travel photographers and one of the world’s best-selling photography authors.

At age 15 Lee came across a brick-like Soviet Zenith 35mm SLR and quickly came to realise, that he had found his calling. He was still a teenager, when his work started to appear in the UK photographic press. In 1988 he entered a portfolio of travel images into a competition in SLR Photography Magazine and won. The prize was an all-expenses-paid week shadowing a professional photographer shooting for a holiday brochure. In addition, he got the job of Features Writer on the same magazine. Writing turned out to be Lee’s second calling. He helped to launch and produce the highly successful Photo Answers magazine and eventually became its editor. He was also an assistant editor of Practical Photography.

Since 1992, when Lee was 25, he has been working as a freelance photographer. More than 20 years, 20 books, hundreds of magazine articles, hundreds of thousands of images and millions of words later, he is still going strong. For the last ten years he has been conducting highly sought after photography workshops and photo tours around the world through his company Photo Adventures, passing on his passion for all things photographic to like-minded souls.

He is more enthusiastic, more inspired, more committed to making photographs than ever before, as the next bend in the road, the next hill, the next sunrise or sunset, the next county or country might be holding an all-different new view.

Photo Art

Over the years, Lee Frost has left his mark on photography and photography in turn has left his mark on him. With his keen eye and intense curiosity he brings the excitement of a child to his way of viewing the world. Lee has stated repeatedly, that he does not consider his photography work, but a way to be able to spend life without having to work. This statement really is indication of Lee’s commitment and his enthusiasm to what he sees and his urge to share it with others. What he shows in his pictures is his absorption by his visual experience, absorbing it in turn. It is this synthesis of the photographer and his image, which characterizes Lee Frost’s photographic exploration of a world, which never fails to fill him with amazement. The assuredness with which he again and again turns this amazement into images of both power and sensitivity makes him a true polyglot of photography, familiar with every possible aspect involved in its creative process. Contrasts and colour schemes speak the loudest languages in Lee’s photographic world, but there are many more layers to discover, speaking to much most than just the eye.

Lee Frost’s coastal photography is charged with energy and emotion. A master at contrasts, he draws out what divides and what connects, sometimes delineating it in stark contrasts, sometimes blending it in soft unifying blurs. His photographs cover the whole range of colours and textures of water and land, as they meet, from harsh black-and-whites and jagged rock formations to soft pastels and rounded forms gently caressed by a benevolent sea. The Series Coasts has a clear focus on nature rendered in all her manifold beauty, but signs of the presence of man also appear, and when they do they provide the photographic focus as tokens of futility perched precariously on the world’s timeless features, following their own rules. History at times does leave its mark on nature and the contrast creates beauty, which Lee expertly captures with these nature shots.

The fascination of a place flaunting its charms so unashamedly cannot but capture the imagination of Lee Frost. His Cuban images almost appear to be from a place not on earth. Surely, something so man-made and yet so naturally charming does not exist on our planet? Can anybody picture the synthesis of baroque glory, shining technology, fading splendour, and nature insisting on its place in the dance as aptly and feelingly as Lee Frost? The result is exuberance and sentimentality at the same time, in bold colours, soothing skies, the presence of revolutionaries in clothes fit for Siberia next to obvious beauty queens. These Cuban photographs are also testimony to journeys from rags to riches and back and at times speak a language of almost painful abandonment.

Iceland has spoken to Lee Frost’s imagination in many ways. How he transfers what he sees into photography bears witness to the experience of the otherworldliness inherent in this island made of fire and ice. These two elements dominate Lee’s Icelandic photography, which celebrates the beauty of elements often hostile to human closeness. There is no compromise between man and the elements, they dictate their rules, appearing in places unexpectedly and suggestive of things and creatures of distant lands and distant times. And yet, can there be more softness, than in the land dipped into spring light and golden green of new growth? The photographs of Lee Frost’s Series Iceland are symphonies, some in mayor, some in minor scales.

The Series Sense of Place, with all its photographs coming from the same place, reminds us in its Rothkoesque simplicity, that every moment contains all possibilities, that what we see, what we want to see, is coloured by our emotions more than by what we really see. The Series Sense of Place, with all its photographs coming from the same place, reminds us in its Rothkoesque simplicity, that every moment contains all possibilities, that what we see, what we want to see, is coloured by our emotions more than by what we really see. The result of Lee’s decision to unveil the content of the moment is of almost existential significance. He does it with the help of processing techniques and if there ever was a proof to justify their use, it lies in these powerful images, each one with its own sense of place captured by Lee’s camera.

The Series Time & Tide, an all black-and-white series, comprises work from other series of Lee Frost as well as independent photographs. The Series Time & Tide, an all black-and-white series, comprises work from other series of Lee Frost as well as independent photographs. In black-and-white, just like in colour images, Lee proves as much the master of contrasts in both shades and themes, sea and land, sharp rock and soothing water, day and night, man and nature. The images are strong, some threatening and others soothing like a dream without colours. Just like a dream the photographs of Time & Tide leave us with a feeling of uncertain beauty.

Lee Frost’s Tuscan photography is taking on a classical theme and succeeds to give it an individual language. His Tuscan images are moving in a framework of contrasts, as they often show the magnificent Tuscan landscapes in the first light of the morning, just waking after the nothingness of night. Florence at night in blue appears more convincing than ever before in terracotta and the familiar features of Venice, which found its way into this series, appear bathed in the soft yellows of the orient.

Different pictures of Tuscany are these almost ghostly images in shades of blacks and greys and whites. As if Tuscany had been transported out of its Italian context and reappeared in the Milky Way, Lee Frost focuses with these ephemeral infrared images of Tuscany on things which otherwise might get overlooked in a symphony of colour. A possibility in its own right and its own strength, Lee Frost’s Series Tuscany Infrared shows that beauty is not a question of colours alone.

Lee Frost’s Series US National Parks is dedicated to the canyons and deserts of the American Southwest. Lee proves his affinity for unusual views and moods of familiar images. Nature is the main protagonist and appears mostly in its inorganic manifestations. Rocks and skies appear to be reflecting each other in all possible shades of the reds and blues, set against each other sharply or melting into each other softly. With US National Parks Lee Frost celebrates nature photography at its best.

Lee Frost’s photos of Namibia capture a place, which has stopped to exist and they are proof of it. They are images of a landscape and the remains of men, who tried to live with it, but got conquered in the end, just like the trees, which did not succeed to take hold of the soil. Strong contrasts of colours and things living and dead, provide Lee with a context for beauty and lost possibilities, and yet also for signs of the healing power of nature and its humble optimism. The photographic documentation of a past lifestyle flows seamlessly into Lee Frost’s unique nature photography.

The art of Lee Frost is dominated by contrasts, but – taking a closer look – is more than meets the eye. Driven by unbridled curiosity, his sharp eye almost absorbes what he sees. Lee Frost, one of the UK’s most acclaimed landscape and travel photographers, has been addicted to photography as a creative process from a very early age. Editor of Photo Answers, Frost keeps sharing his passion for photography with the interested like-minded. With his atmospheric series Venice, the master of contrast invites the beholder to a, as the artist himself calls it, fantastic place for black and white photography. And makes him pause for a moment: The eye rests on the familiar shapes of Venice whose morbid beauty is a magical inspiration – even in bad weather. Five pictures of Venice: The gentle wash of the Grand Canal, presented before a mystic setting, virtually wrapped in mist. Sharp cut silhouettes and the soft blur of shadows merge. So, water, land and architecture meet in a distanced, almost ghostlike way. Frost’s beautiful black and white images encapsulate the essence of Venice's melancholy – maybe even more than the classic views that – speaking with Frost - have been done to death. Here, dreaming Venice was captured in the unique - and recognizable - Lee Frost style.
